If you're going to quit smoking for good, you have to destroy all of the
triggers that make you want to smoke. Different people have different
triggers. Oftentimes it is a combination of of multiple triggers -- oral
fixations, physical addictions, social pressure, nervousness, etc. --
that make you want to smoke a cigarette.
Actually, you can classify every trigger into two categories -- the
desire for pleasure or the desire to avoid pain. A physical addiction
can be painful if it is not met. To avoid that pain, you smoke. Lighting
up a cigarette after eating a tasty meal is pleasurable. In this case,
you want to smoke because you derive a lot of good feelings from it.
So how do you simultaneously smash and destroy all of these triggers so
you can quit smoking for good? It's not that hard. What works for
Pavlov's dog will work for you. Condition yourself to no longer feel
pleasure when smoking a cigarette, no matter what triggers it.
Some people do this with shock therapy. A shock is administered every
time you smoke a cigarette. That's not my style. But the technique is
the same -- to make you feel miserable every time you smoke.
The real trick on how to quit smoking for good is to find different ways
to make yourself feel completely miserable every time you smoke a
cigarette. Try this one out -- tell your friends to call you names and
degrade you every time they see you with a cigarette in your mouth. This
is just one way to make you fill miserable.
Try to employ 10 or 12 of these different tactics and that make you feel
miserable and you will overwhelm yourself, and not want to smoke any
more. And that's how you quit smoking for good.
